Embracing Strengths AND Seasons: Leadership is Not a Linear Upward Line

June Roundtable Recap

How understanding your unique path and owning your strengths can enhance your leadership effectiveness.

I am constantly reminding myself and my clients that we are not robots. We tend to have this irrational belief that we will show up the same way each day and throughout the year. During the recent June #PeopleBeforeStrategy Roundtable, we explored the profound impact of recognizing our strengths and understanding the seasons of our lives. This reflection not only enhances our leadership effectiveness but also helps us better understand what can drive our team's performance and engagement.

The Importance of Strengths

One of the key takeaways from our discussion was the significance of identifying and leveraging our strengths. As one of our guest experts, Magriet Mouton, one of only two Gallup-approved Strengths trainers in Africa, emphasized, "Strengths are the way we think, feel, and behave that can be productively applied." With two decades of experience empowering teams, coaches, and women through her unique, growth-driven approach, Magriet's insights remind us that knowing what we value, and our strengths can significantly impact both individual contributions and the collective energy we bring to our teams. By understanding how our strengths motivate us, we can create intentional pathways toward our goals.

Recognizing and Honoring Our 'Seasons'

Another important theme was the concept of "knowing your seasons." Life is not a constant upward trajectory; it ebbs and flows. Our second guest expert, Tafadzwa Bete Sasa, a productivity coach and co-founder of Training Leaders Co, shared a powerful perspective: "When I'm at my busiest in delivery, I must also recognize when I'm in a quieter season." Tafadzwa, known for helping team leaders foster high-performance cultures through accountability and effective collaboration, has over a decade of experience in Learning and Development. Her TEDx talk, "Accountability is a Love Language," has reached more than 75,000 views, showcasing her commitment to helping teams reach their potential. By mapping out our year with intentionality and understanding when to push forward and when to recharge, we can maintain our energy and effectiveness.

This approach requires self-awareness and reflection. Leaders must regularly assess their progress, celebrate achievements, and pivot when necessary. As we navigate these seasons, the question arises: How can we manage our strengths to energize ourselves and our teams during different phases of our professional and personal lives?

Applying 'Seasons' & Strengths

To harness the power of our strengths and seasons, consider the following actionable strategies based on our conversation:

  1. Identify Your Strengths: Take time to reflect on your unique strengths. You can simply reflect on your values or use tools like the Clifton Strengths assessment to gain insights into what energizes you.

  2. Set Seasonal Goals: Recognize the natural rhythms of your work life. Set specific, measurable goals for peak seasons, and plan for quieter periods where you can focus on personal development and relationship-building.

  3. Create Accountability Structures: Establish regular check-ins with your team or accountability partners to assess progress and realign goals. This fosters accountability and nurtures a culture of support and collaboration.

  4. Engage in Reflection: At the end of each season, take time to reflect on what worked well and what didn't. Use these insights to inform your strategies moving forward.

It is not always easy to acknowledge the 'season' we are in or to double-tap what energizes us. Many of us have been conditioned to focus on what we are not good at and told to stay strong and keep pushing. While there may be times when that is helpful, it is also important to remind ourselves we are not 'robots.' By taking the time to reflect on our progress, celebrating our unique contributions, and supporting each other through the inevitable ups and downs, we will get a lot further over time.
